Durban City’s Nedbank Cup history in numbers

Durban City will host second-tier Casric Stars in the 2026 Nedbank Cup semi-finals, with their tie to be played at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday, 4 April (kick-off 15h00).
City went through a rebrand from the old Maritzburg United in 2024 and are playing their first semi-final as the new entity, but were finalists in the Nedbank Cup in 2018 under their old name when they lost 1-0 to Free State Stars in Cape Town.
Here is a round-up of their Nedbank Cup history in numbers.

0
 – No player has ever scored a hat-trick for City in a Nedbank Cup game. Five players have managed a brace – Terrence Mandaza, Kurt Lentjies, Andrea Fileccia, Yannick Zakri and Thabiso Kutumela.

1
 – City have both scored and conceded just one goal in the Nedbank Cup this season. Their first two ties, with Chippa United and second-tier Upington City, both finished 0-0 and went to penalties. They then drew 1-1 with Durban rivals Lamontville Golden Arrows but also advanced on spot-kicks.

1
 – City have only been ousted by lower-league opponents once in the Nedbank Cup and that was via spot-kicks, so they are yet to taste outright defeat. They drew 2-2 with second-tier Witbank Spurs in 2019 and lost 5-4 on penalties.

2
 – City have faced Casric Stars twice before, both in the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season. City won 2-1 at home but lost 1-0 away in KwaMhlanga.

3
 – The club’s biggest win in the Nedbank Cup was their 3-0 success against fourth-tier Paarl United in the Last 32 in 2024. Coincidentally, that scoreline is also their biggest defeat after they lost 3-0 to Moroka Swallows in 2011.

3
 – This will be City’s third Nedbank Cup semi-final. They reached the last four in 2014 when they were edged 2-1 by Orlando Pirates. They were back again four years later and this time defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 to advance to the final.

4
 – City have needed extra time and penalties in all three of their 2026 Nedbank Cup ties. They advanced on each occasion thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Darren Keet. They also lost on penalties in the quarter-finals in 2025, meaning their last four ties in the competition have all been decided by spot-kicks. That is a Nedbank Cup record.

4
 – Thabiso Kutumela and Terrence Mandaza are the leading scorers for the club in the Nedbank Cup with four goals each.

4
 – City have kept clean sheets in four of their last six Nedbank Cup ties, only conceding two goals in that time and never more than one per match. The last team to score twice against them was Mamelodi Sundowns in 2024.

5
 – City have now been drawn at home in five of their last six Nedbank Cup ties, and the one ‘away’ game was the very short trip to Durban rivals Lamontville Golden Arrows. Their last fixture outside of KwaZulu-Natal was therefore the trip to Rustenburg to face Lerumo Lions in the Last 32 in 2025.

6
 – City have been involved in eight penalty shoot-outs in the Nedbank Cup, winning six of those (75%), which is a strong record. Their only defeats came to second-tier Witbank Spurs in 2019 and Marumo Gallants in 2025.

18
 – City have competed, either under their current name or as Maritzburg United, in the last 18 seasons of the Nedbank Cup. The only one they missed was the inaugural one in 2008 when they were in the second tier and lost out to African Warriors in the preliminary round.

37
 – The club has played 37 matches in the Nedbank Cup, winning 15 of those (41%) to go with eight draws (21%) and 14 defeats (38%).

360
 – Two players have been ever-presents for City in the Nedbank Cup this season. Goalkeeper Darren Keet has played all 360 minutes, as has centre-back Siphamandla Ncanana. No players have played more minutes for any club this campaign.
